The TCF Canada exam includes four mandatory sections, each designed to test a specific language skill.
Here’s the structure and duration for each part:
1️⃣ Listening comprehension — 39 multiple-choice questions (about 29 minutes)
Tests your ability to understand everyday French conversations and short dialogues.
2️⃣ Reading comprehension — 39 multiple-choice questions (about 45 minutes)
Evaluates your ability to read and understand written French texts such as ads, articles, and messages.
3️⃣ Written expression — 3 written tasks (about 60 minutes)
You will write short messages, letters, and arguments based on given situations.
4️⃣ Oral expression — 3 speaking tasks (about 15 minutes)
An interview with an examiner where you introduce yourself, interact, and give your opinion on a topic.
👉 The entire test lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Each section is graded according to the CEFR levels (A1 to C2) used for Canadian immigration.
The TCF Canada exam includes four mandatory parts that test your language skills in French.
1️⃣ Listening comprehension – 39 questions, about 29 minutes.
2️⃣ Reading comprehension – 39 questions, about 45 minutes.
3️⃣ Written expression – 3 writing tasks, about 60 minutes.
4️⃣ Oral expression – 3 speaking tasks, about 15 minutes.
The full exam lasts around 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Each part is graded from A1 (beginner) to C2 (advanced) according to the CEFR scale, which is used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
For Canadian immigration, your TCF Canada score is converted to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) levels.
Each skill (listening, reading, writing, speaking) has a corresponding CLB level from 1 to 10.
Most immigration programs such as Express Entry require at least CLB 7 (equivalent to B2 level in French).
To earn the maximum language points, aim for CLB 9 or higher, which means achieving C1 level in French.
Your language score can make a big difference in your immigration ranking, so reaching a strong B2–C1 level is highly recommended.
There are several ways to prepare effectively for the TCF Canada exam.
You can find official sample tests on the France Éducation International website, as well as practice materials on platforms like TV5Monde and Go TCF Canada.
At Go TCF Canada, you’ll find:
Real mock exams simulating official test conditions.
Video lessons explaining examiner expectations.
PDF models for written and oral expression tasks.
Vocabulary and grammar exercises by level (A1–C2).
Practicing regularly with realistic questions will help you get familiar with the test structure and improve your score faster.
With more than 6 years of experience helping students succeed on the TCF Canada, I’ve seen how the right guidance makes all the difference. Many candidates fail simply because they don’t know what examiners expect or how to structure their answers.
Working with a certified TCF Canada coach helps you save time, avoid costly retakes, and focus on the exact skills that matter for your immigration goals. My method combines clear strategies, personalized feedback, and real exam simulations — so you can reach your B2 or C1 level with confidence.
